achieved this milestone is very nonsocialist, actually. under obama the economy has created about $ 967,000 private sector jobs. so if obama is in fact a socialist, he's not very good at it. second in, romney's standard stump speech, we've now had quote 43 street months with ununemployment over 8%. we are now under 8%. and third, this is probably the most important for the campaign. the debate was only two days ago. today is friday. the debate was wednesday. but this is a big enough jobs report, striking enough, that it has turned the whole national conversation. romney could have used a few more days of momentum. now instead of having a weekend where anyone can talk about his debate, the jobs report is dominating the headlines. >> joining me now is a senior fellow and was a member of the president obama's debt commission. she knows more about budgets i think than anyone in the world. and sam stein political editor and white house correspondent. thank you for being here. >> alice, 7.8 is a lot better than 8.1 but it's obviously not as low as we would like. the progress has been somewhat
that is the obama economy continues, despite the bogus jobs. in 32 days, we will all have the opportunity to go to the polls and do something about this. joining me with the analysis, the one and only architect, karl rove. karl rove, let me see if i can put this in very simple terms. we have -- and this is what they are saying is an economic recovery. we have fewer jobs in september, created than we had in august, fewer jobs in august than we had in july, and we will have fewer jobs in 2012 than we had in 2011. just a fact, the economy in 2012 is worse than the economy in 2011. and the economy in 2011 is worse than the recovery summer job year of 2010. how did they make this claim? >> well, look, the economy is slowing up. and the numbers bear it out. the number -- you used -- there are two job numbers. there is the household survey, which generated this very high number, which doesn't smell right. then there is the number on which they base unemployment, which is the so-called business survey or company survey. that shows 114,000 new jobs created in september. you are right. that's less than i
the economy just to try to score a few political points. >> reporter: these monthly jobs epoorts always cause great anxiety around obama campaign headquarters. they are keenly aware that the numbers can influence voters' impressions of the president's handling of the economy. ohere is just one more report coming between now and november 6, scott, and it comes just four days before election day. >> pelley: one more report coming but, remember, quite a ng bstates are already voting. thank you very much, nancy. rd icrawford is with the romney eympaign in st. petersburg, florida, tonight, jan? >> reporter: scott, until today y e of the most reliable lines in romney's campaign speeches was that under president obama the economy -- the unemployment, that is, had not gone below 8%. low today he's saying that even though there's been this slight decline, this economy is nowhere near where it should be or where it could be if he were president. >> looks like unemployment's getting better. but the truth is, if the same share of people were participating in the work force today as on the day the preside
was producing at the time, the size of the deficit compared with the economy, under president obama's watch sill the biggest size of a deficit as compared with the economy, still the biggest since roosevelt. look at roosevelt, look back at fdr. the deficit then was nearly as big and that deficit was almost erased. how did roosevelt do that? created social security and levied heavier taxes, programs for housing and agriculture, put new controls over banks, public utilities and created enormous work relief programs for the unemployed. sounds similar to the president's proposals today, but unlike the last four years fdr saw the unemployment drop, millions of jobs created, gdp jumped, the deficit shrank and the middle class saw a huge expansion that lasted for decades, a building of the middle class that's the envy of the world or used to be. peter, peter morici, can this feat of rebuilding the middle class and reducing the deficit, can that happen again? >> absolutely, but we have to remember that roosevelt inherited a very small government, so expanding it wasn't the rock on the back of the privat
for the american recovery. somebody said obama didn't know anything about the economy. well, forget that for now. the national unemployment rate fell to, count it, 7.8%. 114,000 jobs were added to the payrolls. an additional 86,000 were added to revisions for july and august. the labor force grew, my friends, by 418,000, which means the drop in unemployment is not due to people giving up on looking for work, which is a great republican talking point. president obama broke the news to supporters during a rally in virginia today. >> this morning we found out that the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level since i took office. more americans entered the work force, more people are getting jobs. >> the president made clear the economy is not out of the woods. it's never going to be out of the woods. look where we're going. there are still a lot of people who are waiting for the recovery to reach them. >> we've still got too many friends and neighbors who are looking for work. there are too many middle class families that are still struggling to pay the bills. they were struggling long befo
in the jobless rate. what does it mean for president obama and the economy? that's the power of human resources. the society... for human resource management and its members know... how to harness that power, because we help develop it. from the next economy, to the next generation, we help get... the most out of business, by getting the best out of people. shrm. leading people, leading organizations. >>> it's not an october surprise, but certainly some welcome news for the obama white house, waging what has been an uphill battle against unemployment. this week the labor department reported the jobless rate fell sharply in september to 7.8%. that's the same level it was when president obama took office back in january 2009. actual growth last month was modest. only 1114,000 jobs created. but the labor department ao revised the july and august number to include an 86,000 new jobs. let's talk about it with austin goolsby. austin, thanks very much for coming in. what is this jobs report mean to you? >> well, i think it's a good sign. you know, when i was in the white house, i used to say every mon
was growing, producing 200,000 jobs a year, it looked like the economy might be enough to lift obama to a safe level, then the big spring slow down, and now i think we're getting numbs, whether it's growth or jobs that are really neither, that point you again to a close race. it's been a modest up tick in economic optimism. but i think these kind of numbers reinforce the sense we have in the race itself that you don't have a decisive wind blowing in either direction at this point. >> voters are already beginning to feel a little more optimistic. we see that in the polls. this will add to a sense of optimism and that's good for the president. >> i think a little more but not vastly more. it's not a strong tail wind but it's better than a head wind. >> let me play a couple of clips. i want to discuss what he's saying. listen to this. >> what's happened is this has been the slowest recovery since the great depression. as a matter of fact, he said right now we would be at 5.4% unemployment. instead, we're at 8.1%. >> we've had 43 straight months with unemployment above 8%. if i'm president, i will
totally stimulated the economy when you gave that panhandler at a dollar. even obama joked after his annual thanksgiving pardon that he saved or created four turkeys. my friends here know that i have a contrarian streak. i don't do groupthink. the guy who visited gulf after the bp spill and rode the environmental damage was being overstated, i was right. i had data. arguing that the stimulus was a new new deal was not just considered contrarian but delusional. like arguing the bp spill didn't happen. we can discuss why. a combination of relentless republican distortion, incompetent white house communication, brain dead media coverage, the unfortunate timing of the jobs bill that passed when the u.s. was hemorrhaging a hundred thousand jobs a month. the financial if quake had hit with the economic tsunami hadn't hit the tour. fortunately in 2010 i was 1,000 miles away and pretty oblivious to the prevailing stimulus narrative but i did become aware because i write about the environment that the stimulus included $90 billion for clean energy leveraging another $100 billion in private ca
us some encouragement. it shouldn't be an excuse for the other side to try to talk down the economy. just to try to score a few political points. gwen: on balance, 34 days out, what is the bigger deal? the worse deal? a bad debate or a good job number, dan? >> if president obama can turn around perceptions about the economy that ultimately will be a bigger deal. incumbent presidents have suffered through bad fist debates and been a table bounce back. if you have a really lousy economy it's tough to go against that. the interesting thing is that the obama campaign for months after one weak jobs number after another have always discounted the unemployment number. i think today they want people to look at that and they want people to think we've gone through at least a psychological barrier. there's been some evidence since the conventions that people do feel a little bit better about the commiff. that was helping president obama until the denver debate. now this race is tight and very much in flux. gwen: let's talk about the trend lines. the president can still claim 31 months of unsb
it the economy tax. it's been crushing. >> question. why did president obama seem thrown off balance? did he underestimate governor romney, pat buchanan? >> he certainly d. governor romney performed better on substance than any candidate in any presidential debate in history. reagan would have beaten him in style in 1980 but on substance i've never seen anybody better prepared than governor romney. he was on of fence. the real question, why did barack obama, the president, do so badly. john, he didn't come prepared for what he found there. he seemed difident, almost disinterested, sour. when they had the two pictures together he was looking down at his notes and the governor was talking to him as if he was lecturing him. some say he's lost his enthusiasm for the battle. he looked like he was weary of the job. i think it may have been something to do with him having been out on the road for a year saying the same thing. he didn't seem to be intellectually stimulated. >> do you think he's overstating that? >> i think mitt romney far exceeded expectations. he turned in a bothow performance. i t
show down this weekend for the vice presidents. >> in his weekly address, president obama is talking about the sudden drop in unemployment that is good news for the economy and a great news for his reelection campaign. >> more americans are entering the workforce. more americans are getting jobs. if that unemployment dropped from 8.1% to 7.9%, but mitt romney -- >> we are having problems with that story. the latest political news on our website, wbaltv.com, with the up-to-date information for state, local, and national elections. >>> they had fought for years to fight extradition. now four suspects are in u.s. courts. how they answered the charges against them. he was convicted of stealing the pope's private papers and linking them to a journalist. why he may not spend any time in prison, next. prison, next. >>> an extremist clear-cut and four other suspect appeared in court today hours after they were brought for into the u.s. to face trial. the preacher did not enter replete of charges he conspired to set up a terrorist training camp and at oregon and abducted 16 hostages. four oth
by 873,000. this is the first time below 8% since january 2009, when obama took office. >> the campaigns have taken on the news, but as a bigt is seen positive for the obama campaign. at a rally, the president called is gettinghe economy better. said the country has made too much progress to turn back. >> in the meantime, mitt romney that 12on the fact people are still out of work. mitt romney also stressed an 7.8% is not rate of what a real recovery looks like. after campaigning in virginia earlier today, he hosted a rally in florida tonight. >> a new controversy concerns starbucks and it's a bestseller. >> the orioles are fighting to keep playing. the nationals, we know who they are playing. every gameonitoring impact the washington nationals playoff series. we know who -- we now know who the nationals will face. >> the st. louis cardinals, on sunday. we are also keeping a close eye baltimore orioles, who are playing right now. there is a lot of excitement over playoff fever. >> there is reason to be the orioles will continue playing. worse, we know the nationals playing. -- of course,
that was losing nearly 800,000 jobs a month when president obama took office to a place now where the economy has created 5.2 million new jo. so we're getting there. we're not there yet but we're getting there. >> john, mitt romney yesterday amid all the ecstasy about his debate performance took time on fox to say that he was now very sorry for saying what he said about the 47%. was that a smart political move in a moment of everyone feeling good about you to just bury that away? >> i think the timing was right that he said that, but i do hope he doesn't move away from what the bigger argument that he was trying to make, is that there are two choices in america today. are we going to become a country very, very dependent on big government that says give me all your money, give me your taxes and i will take care of you, or one that really says the individual has the right to keep more of their money, make more of their decisions and freedom is what made america the country that it is. that is fundamentally the question. but from a strategy or tactical standpoint, i think this was the time for him
that mitt romney was making about the economy and president obama has to be at least some point attenuated, meaning that bottom line, with unemployment going below 8% for the first time since the start of the administration in '09, the obama administration can make the case that some of their policies have produced some results. given the debate results on tuesday night, this is a potential life saver, if not a game changer for president obama. >> jamie: i suppose it has to continue and. >> yeah. >> jamie: let me ask you, angela, what's the important number, that it's below 8 or that 23 million people are out of work? >> exactly. 23 million people are still out of work, and you have 47 million people still on food stamps, so, i think the beltway and journalists care about the numbers, but if you don't have a job, if you can't pay your bills and gas prices are still high like they are here in california that's what you're going going to vote on and the obama administration failed. >> jamie: doug and angela, have a great saturday and always good to talk to you. we're just five days away from
-time work as a home designer. >> it forces two in the bush. i'm not confident in the economy. >> reporter: well as you might expect, president obama and mitt romney saw today's job numbers much differently. >> today's news should give us some encouragement. it shouldn't be an excuse for the other side to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. >> so it looks like unemployment is getting better, but the truth is if the same share of people were participating in the work force, the day that the president got elected while the unemployment rate would be around 11%. and that's the real reality of what's happening on out there. >> 40% of the unemployed have been out of work six months or more. that number did not drop last month. economists say we need to add 200,000 jobs or more every month to make a dent in the unemployment rate. linda yee, cbs5. >>> in one bay area county, why some cities are being forced to import other people's garbage. >>> a california man dies from a disease we almost never see here in america. how a sick bat triggered an international health scare
this afternoon, in which he attacks president obama over his debate performance. >> president obama could not defend his record. he offered no new ideas for how to fix the economy. i welcome the chance to share my vision for renewed prosperity and opportunity and i think it compared quite favorably to president obama's policy for big, trickle-down government. >> this past hour, mitt romney's son, josh, met with reporters in the swing state of virginia. it's part of a day-long effort the campaign is calling super saturday, with volunteers going door to door in battleground states. president obama has no public events today. he will head to california tomorrow, where he is expected to tout the new jobs number, 7.8%, and some big fund-raising numbers out today. president obama and the democrats raised $181 million in september, the highest single-month total so far. more on all these stories throughout the next two hours. >>> the campaign focus shifts a bit next week to the vice presidential nominees. paul ryan and joe biden will face off in their only debate next thursday night. paul ryan h
. >> i understand that the president must campaign. but he also has a job to do. while barack obama enjoys being president, he doesn't seem to enjoy the work required of being a great president. >> if we're going to keep this economy moving forward, there's no time for political gains. even in the political season. >> mitt romney may still be riding a wave after this week's debate, but can that momentum carry over to a win in a crucial battleground state like florida? we'll talk about that later this hour. >>> just hours ago, three suspected terrorists arrived in the u.s. after being extradited from london, including the notorious masri. he has a hook for a hand and called osama bin laden a hero. the radical clearic and others are wanted for radical crimes committed in the u.s. in the 1990s. >>> now, to that deadly libyan consulate attack that killed four americans, two tunesians are being questioned in connection with that. it comes at the request of the u.s. that placed them on a watch list. leon panetta said there is a connection between the two and the attack but hasn't given an
the president obama has no new ideas to fix the economy. his only plan for a second term as a tax increase so large it would destroy over 700,000 jobs. as friday's jobs report shows, america still desperately needs jobs. it the president's soul proposal would mean fewer jobs. we need a new direction. because we cannot afford four more years like the last four. falling incomes, rising prices, 23 million americans struggling for work. $5.50 trillion in new national debt. and now growing turmoil overseas in the middle east. president obama's policies have not worked. as vice president biden admitted, the middle-class has been buried in the last four years. another four years would does barry the middle class even more. during the 2008 debate, then senator obama assured us that he fully understood our problems and that he had the right solution. he promised to make health care more affordable. yeah president obama promise to get our spending under control by cutting the deficits in half. he also was so confident that shortly after taking office, president obama said he would fix the economy in th
with a cheering crowd at a campaign appearance in fairfax virginia. >> obama: this morning we found out that the unemployment rate had fallen to its lowest level since i office. but today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> eliot: not if you're mitt romney. the g.o.p. contender talked down the jobs numbers and the economy at an abingdon, virginia, rally. >> romney: there were fewer new jobs created this month than last month. the unemployment rate as you noted this year has come down very, very slowly. the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> eliot: mitt just can't stand good news on the economy, and neither can his friends on the right, including knocks fuss anchor stuart varney who suspect politics were behind the jobs numbers. >> oh how convenient that the rate dropped below 8% for the in 43 months five weeks before the election. >> eliot: unbelievable jobs number
governors are leading it. and if president obama were following their lead, the national mood and economy would be much, much better right now. >> do you think that conspiracy theories such as being said across the country right now, do you that damages mitt romney? it's getting a lot of play nationwide. it really is. you can't take that away. do you think that's damaging? >> people are entitled to their opinion. this is a free country. it's free speech. i personally accept the numbers as they are. we need to be talking about the issues. the facts, there are still over 20 million people out of work. gas has doubled under this president. >> okay. scott, let's move on to you. florida's unemployment rate stands at 8.8%, one point higher than the national average that came out yesterday. florida also tops the list of states. and some type of foreclosure process, 11%. has president obama done enough to bring back florida's economy? >> well, what we're seeing here in florida is that people do feel better. they feel like we are in a recovery. things are on the move. we are moving forward. and th
care passed or slowly but surely getting the economy on track. president obama is doing well with the american voter because they don't want to fire the black guy. in a nation where race has been narrowly constructed by society, could there possibly be any truth to will's argument that guilt over firing the first black president is what has him ahead in the polls? back with me are cnbc's dan dicker, mya wiley, raul reyes and the nation's ari burman. all right. so of -- >> i want to -- >> let's admit maybe there's four people voting for the president because of racial guilt. i want to see the ledger between those who are voting for him as opposed to those who refuse to vote for him because he's an african-american. >> the complicated thing about this, so much of how race animosity is expressed right now is implicit by us, meaning people who don't consciously think of themselves as racist, who actually believe in equality and equal opportunity, believe that the civil rights movement was a good thing. and actually don't recognize that part of what's happening subconsciously is t
